Keith Haring was born May 4, 1958, in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He briefly studied at a commercial art school in Pittsburgh. In 1978, he moved to New York City, where he found inspiration in the energy of the urban environment, street art, and graffiti. Always aiming to make his art accessible to a public audience, at a low cost, Haring opened his Pop Shops in New York and Tokyo. He successfully mass-produced his imagery on everything from T-shirts, buttons, radios, to soup bowls and condom holders. He frequently worked with activist groups and donated time and artwork to literacy programs, anti-Apartheid and antinuclear rallies, gay rights and AIDS education. In 1988, Haring learned that he was HIV-positive. Rather than give in to his illness, he continued making art at a frenetic pace, increasing the number of his public projects in the U.S. and abroad. He used his imagery during the last years of his life to speak about his own illness and generate activism and awareness about AIDS. Keith Haring died on February 16, 1990 of AIDS related causes. He was 31 old. |
